Greeting Box - Custom messages by referrer in Drupal

July 5th, 2009 10:29pm in drupal, greeting box, module, php

If you’re visiting here by following a link from another site (which is what inevitably happens) you may have noticed a message fade in up at the top of the page… something like this:

This is courtesy of a brand new Drupal module called Greeting Box that I have just completed and am in the process of submitting to drupal.org’s official modules directory. Consider this the official announcement!

Quite simply, Greeting Box allows a Drupal administrator to customize the message a user sees when visiting their site by following a link from one of almost forty referring website sites. It also allows custom domains (referrers) to be added as the admin needs.

Greeting Box supports 35 popular referring websites including all of their sub-domains as well as every domain owned by Google:

  • AIM - aim.com, aolcdn.com
  • Apple - apple.com
  • Bebo - bebo.com

Download

You may download the module in beta format as it is implemented here on this site. Install it the same way you would any other module in Drupal, but note that it has only been tested with version 6.11. You mileage may vary with other versions, especially Drupal 5, for which this was NOT designed.

New Features

This module may eventually also include the following features:

  • an implementation of the Token API project so that custom, dynamic data can be embedded in the messages
  • custom messages based on browser, specifically for mobile devices
  • your suggestions?
